How to Build and Review a Light and Dark Interface Theme

A theme gives an interface a shared set of visual decisions. It defines how text, backgrounds, controls, and boundaries appear across screens. When an application offers both light and dark appearances, those decisions need to support the same tasks in each mode. A useful review therefore examines real content and interaction states alongside the palette.

Begin by listing the elements the interface must distinguish. A page background, a card, a text field, and a primary button each have a different job. Name those jobs before selecting colors. Keep an inventory of the text that appears on each surface, including labels, instructions, secondary details, and messages.

The free shadcn/ui theme generator from Nodlume lets you adjust a palette, fonts, type scale, and visual shape while reviewing light and dark appearances. Its Tailwind v4 globals.css export includes both modes. The editor works without an account and saves the theme locally in your browser.

Choose a representative screen for your own review. A settings page is one option because it can contain headings, explanations, inputs, switches, and save controls. Populate it with realistic labels and one longer description. Keep the content unchanged while comparing appearances so your attention stays on the differences you are evaluating.

Start with reading. Can you distinguish headings from body text? Are secondary details readable without competing with the main content? Check text against the actual surface behind it. A color sample on its own does not show how a long paragraph, small label, or selected control will appear in context.

Next, review the boundaries between surfaces. Decide where the page needs a border, a different background, or spacing to separate sections. Inspect the same area in both appearances. Write down the role of each boundary so later changes do not add several competing treatments to solve the same problem.

Review controls in the states the product will use. Include an empty input, an entered value, a selected option, and a message requesting a correction. In an implemented screen, inspect keyboard focus as well. Keep the status wording clear enough that a person can understand the message without relying on its color alone.

For focused experiments, Nodlume’s free design tools also include a color converter with contrast information, a dark mode converter, and a CSS box shadow generator. These tools let you inspect individual choices alongside the broader theme rather than changing several settings at once.

Treat contrast measurements as information about the tested color pair. Continue reviewing the complete interface, including labels, interactions, and content order. Record which combinations you checked and where they are used. When a component introduces another background or state, include that combination in the review rather than assuming an earlier result covers it.

Test information that is easy to overlook in a polished example. Add a longer error message, a muted timestamp, a disabled option with an explanation, and a selected navigation item. If the product contains charts, review their labels and legends in the context where the charts actually appear.

Make changes in small groups. Adjust text and surface colors, review them, and then turn to borders or shadows. Keep a copy of the previous export before replacing it. A short note about the intended change gives a colleague something concrete to assess and helps you compare revisions later.

Bring the theme into a limited part of the application first. Check the controls and content that your project actually renders, including any custom styling already present. A preview provides a useful starting reference, while the implemented screen shows how that reference interacts with the application.

Finish with a dated theme file and a brief review record. List the screens and states examined, the remaining questions, and the next change to investigate. When new components are added, use that record to extend the review deliberately.
